Before finding Mrs Right in former Miss World and one of Bollywood’s highest paid actresses, Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan was affianced to the actress Karishma Kapoor.
Abhishek and Karishma celebrated their engagement back in 2002 at the book launch of Amitabh Bachchan’s To Be or Not to Be. Both of their families were over the moon at the union, as were fans.
However, while everyone waited with bated breath for the announcement of a wedding date, Abhishek and Karishma broke up. Not long after that, Karishma married her childhood sweetheart, Sunjay Kapoor, a businessman, and quit the film industry. Karishma and Sunjay, who has a substance abuse problem, are no longer married. However, they do have a daughter together.
While Karishma adjusted to married life, Abhishek threw himself into his work. Not only did he step out from under his father’s shadow, he proved his mettle as an actor in films like Dhoom (2004), Phir Milenge (2004), Yuva (2004), Sarkar (2005) and Bunty Aur Babli (2005), to name a few.
Aside from bagging numerous awards, Abhishek’s giant strides in Hindi cinema drew unwanted attention to his off-screen life and he was romantically linked to a number of his female co-stars – from Rani Mukherji and Preity Zinta to Esha Deol.
Soon tongues were wagging about the suave actor’s romance with model-turned-actress Dipannita Sharma, who made her foray into Bollywood with December 16 opposite the gorgeous Milind Soman. Apparently the two were introduced at a party thrown by Sonali Bendre and Abhishek’s good friend, Goldie Behl.
Weeks later CineBlitz reported that Abhishek dumped Dipannita and the actress had locked herself in her flat and had been bawling her eyes out.
There hasn’t been much prying into Abhishek’s love life until a few months ago when he was linked to Dhoom 2 co-star Aishwarya, who had broken up with fellow actor Viveik Oberoi.
in the past, Aishwarya had a very tumultuous relationship with Bollywood’s bad boy Salman Khan, who is now dating model-turned actress Katrina Kaif.
At first, Abhishek and Aishwarya denied any romantic involvement, saying they were “just friends”. There were even rumours that Jaya (Abhishek’s mother) was not keen on the romance – something to do with their astrology not matching.
However, it looks like everything has worked out for the better. And let’s be honest, they do make a gorgeous couple.
