India: India’s customs department has seized a package containing €24,000 (US$28,800) in cash sent to Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai by a Netherlands-based Indian event organizer, a news report said Wednesday
The cash was found during a routine check by Mumbai’s postal department, DNA newspaper said. It was tucked inside a package containing electronic goods, the daily reported.
Under Indian laws, sending more than 5,000 rupees (US$111, €92) in cash through the mail is an offense.
Rai’s secretary, Hari Singh, said the actress, a former Miss World, knew nothing about the package.
“I’ve read about this only in newspapers. We have not heard anything from the customs or postal department,” Singh told The Associated Press.
The customs department was investigating the matter, the Mumbai-based newspaper reported.
